Implant Placement Post-Op Instructions
Protect the Surgical Site: Do not disturb the wound. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the surgical area on the day of surgery. There may be a metal healing abutment visible through the gum tissue.
Pain Management: Some discomfort is normal for up to a week. If pain increases over the first week, please contact our office. Take all prescribed medications as directed, including antibiotics, to promote healthy healing.
Cold Therapy: Use an ice pack on the surgical area for 10 minutes on and off for the first few hours to reduce swelling.
Salt Water Rinses: After the first day, rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp. salt in 8 oz. warm water) after meals for one week to reduce bacteria and promote healing.
Brushing: After the first week, start brushing the area gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush to avoid disturbing stitches or the healing area.
Bleeding
Some bleeding and redness in the saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. To control excessive bleeding, bite down on a gauze pad placed directly on the wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, please call us for further instructions.
Swelling
Swelling is a natural part of the healing process. Minimize it by applying a cold pack to the outside of your cheek near the surgical site for the first 36 hours.
Diet
Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid hot liquids or foods on the day of surgery. Stick to soft foods and liquids initially, and return to a normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable unless instructed otherwise.
Pain Management
Mild to Moderate Pain: Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as needed. Ibuprofen can be taken in 200 mg doses, 2-3 tablets every 3-4 hours.
Severe Pain: Use the prescribed pain medication as directed. Avoid combining different pain medications unless advised by your doctor.
Antibiotics
Take all prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection. Skipping doses can increase the risk of implant failure.
Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is critical for proper healing. Begin gentle brushing three days after surgery and use warm salt water rinses 4-5 times a day, especially after meals. Be cautious around the surgical area to avoid disrupting stitches or healing tissue.
Physical Activity
Limit physical activity immediately following surgery. If bleeding or throbbing occurs during exercise, stop immediately and rest.
Temporary Crowns or Bridges
If you have temporary crowns or bridges, chew carefully to avoid cracking or breaking them. These are made of plastic or resin and are more fragile than permanent restorations.
Home Care and Hygiene for Implants
Schedule regular cleanings every 3-4 months to maintain your implants.
Use a Waterpik in addition to regular brushing and flossing to keep the implant area clean.
Avoid chewing on hard items like ice or bones to protect your implants.
Denture Patients
Rinse dentures after every meal and clean them thoroughly at least once a day.
Store dentures in cool water when not in use to prevent warping.
Avoid using tobacco, as it can significantly increase the risk of implant failure.
